| Two Charged in Bucktown Baseball Bat Attack |
[Apr. 27th, 2010|03:58 pm] |
A man and his girlfriend have been charged in a baseball bat attack in Bucktown that seriously injured two women, sources say. Heriberto Viramontes, 30, of the 3100 block of North Springfield Avenue and Marcy Cruz, 25, were each charged with aggravated battery and armed robbery. Records from cell phones and credit cards stolen from the women helped lead police to Viramontes and Cruz, a source said. A bat has been recovered, the source added. Natasha McShane, 23, and Stacy Jurich, 24, were beaten and robbed around 3:30 a.m. Friday in the 1800 block of North Damen Avenue. Viramontes told Cruz he planned to rob people in Bucktown, a source said. Cruz drove him to the area in a van and stayed in the neighborhood, according to the source. Cruz told investigators she did not see the attack on McShane and Jurich, but Viramontes told her what he did, the source said.
When police questioned Viramontes about credit cards belonging to the women, he told them he bought the cards from someone on the West Side, a source said.
Officers searching the home of the suspects found items belonging to McShane and Jurich in a garbage can, a source said. McShane -- a University of Illinois at Chicago graduate student who has been in Chicago since January -- had been celebrating with Jurich after learning she had gotten an internship and could stay longer in Chicago, friends said. On their way back to Jurich's home, they were attacked from behind and struck on the back of their heads with a baseball bat. Jurich's condition today was upgraded from serious to fair, but McShane remains in critical condition, said Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center spokeswoman Noreen Keeney. |

| Last Sunday's Bible - Luke 22:7-23 |
[Apr. 20th, 2010|08:47 pm] |
The came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be and He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat." So they said to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare?" and He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. Then you shall say to the master of the house, "The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?" ' Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready." So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover. When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. Then He said to them, "With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and sai itd, "Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this remembrance of Me." Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!" Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing. |

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presense with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. be thanksful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

If you love Me, keep My commandments.

| Metra Hikes Start Today |
[Feb. 1st, 2010|01:12 pm] |
Metra conductor Joseph Velazquez checking for and punching tickets on a northbound Metra train Thursday late afternoon. While most Metra users won't notice a difference, riders who buy one-way tickets or use the commuter rail system's weekend passes will be paying more starting Monday, Feb. 1. (Phil Velasquez, Chicago Tribune / January 27, 2010)
Metra riders who buy one-way tickets or use weekend passes will pay a little more starting today. So will passengers who don't get a ticket at the station and end up buying a ticket from the conductor. Most Metra users won't see a difference in what they pay. About 79% of riders use 10-ride tickets and monthly passes, officials said, and those prices will not increase. One-way tickets will cost an average of 6% more, depending on distance. The per-ticket increase will range from 10 cents to 45 cents for the farthest zone. The cost of weekend passes will rise from $5 to $7. This is the first time Metra has increased that fare since 1991. |
